Update #4: Grad School Future

(Note: I got a couple more of these updates, then I'll start talking about other stuff! So if you ain't digging these posts, just wait a little longer.)

Okay, so I went into detail how I took the GRE, applied for the Michener Center twice, and got rejected both times. After all that, I decided I put it aside and do other things, like look for a job that actually pays a living wage and move out of my parents' house. And here we are, over two years after I wrote about the last time I applied. Have things changed? Yep!

For one, I read this book. I remember it being a big thing when it came out. I wanted to check it out since I was still thinking about grad school and if I needed it to be a writer. That book helped me realize that it wasn't worth it and perhaps I am fine winging it.

I thought about applying for grad school again. And yes, for the same damn MFA in Creative Writing. But then I remembered I had a copy of this book and decided to read that first. Doing so did squash that obsession.

And one last reminder, my new all-time favorite writer actually DROPPED out of grad school and continued to do her own thing. That's right, you heard me. She freaking left and soon proved she didn't need it. If I ever get the itch again, all I have to do is think "If Helen Oyeyemi* didn't need it, maybe I don't need it either".

But now something else came up. Another idea for grad school dreams: perhaps a degree in a different field, like a Master's in Library Science. It was amplified when I found out a while back that my friend was thinking of getting this degree and signed up for the upcoming semester for an online program. Keep in mind she has an eight-month-old kid and a full-time job. I don't know how she does it. I'm lucky I catch up with my daily writing quota and I'm single!

After a while of thinking about it, and even doing some research on programs, I came to a hard yet necessary decision: no, I do not need grad school. Do I even want it? Actually, not really on that either. I wanted to put my concentration on doing good at my job (which is going very well actually), saving up for a new car, finding a new apartment to move into next year, and above all: build my writing muscle and launch that career.

Grad school would prove to be a distraction. I can easily work at a job like a customer service call center and do all the writing on the side. I thank my current job for showing that it was possible. Since I'm not fretting over losing it (like the bank job) and am doing well at it, I can focus on my writing.

Nothing wrong with anyone wanting to go to grad school. In fact, I'm stoked for my friend and wish her nothing but the best in her journey. It was important for me to know when some things are a good fit and when some are not.

Many of my friends are having children. I never want to have kids, I rather have puppies and kittens.
Some of my friends are English teachers. I am fine working in customer service.
Some are going to grad school. I am very content with my Bachelor's and learning outside school.

And that, my friends, is what life is all about: finding your path and sticking to it.

I Swear to Gone, I'm Not God!

Sorry for the lack of posts. I didn't really set this up properly. I wanted to do a posting on ever Wednesday and Saturday, but I haven't established that habit yet. It is a work in progress.

Here is what's been going down since I last wrote:

  • Despite the raise in rent, I am going to stay for one more year at the abode. I plan to negotiate something, but it's not gonna make me leave if I don't succeed.
  • Turns out I am not going to get a bonus for May. Dammit. And to make it better, not for this last month either! UGH
  • My credit cards' balances are going back up, so I need to put a stop to that.
  • My weight-loss journey has slowed to a crawl. I need to do something to get back on track. Exercise maybe? (Yes)
  • My reading habits have slowed down too and have been trying to play catch-up and finish my currently-reading list, along with any library borrows.

Yeah, this is not exactly the happiest of entries, but it is what it is. Who knows where I could be this time next month. There is only one way to find out...

To 2016... and Beyond!

Hey everyone, kinda late, but yea, we're in 2016! We got a lot to look forward to!

...except the elections. Boy, I can already see it will NOT be fun there. No matter who wins, we're all gonna lose. Unless Sanders gets it, then we'll be fine*.

~~

Anyway, this is not about politics. This is about me, this blog, and the future. What does it hold? I'm sure you're already away, but for those who don't, I am currently training at a new job as a customer service rep for a huge healthcare insurance company. I'm set to take calls for the first time next week (for a little while, then we're off again to learn about DHMOs for two weeks), so I'm focusing my energy at this moment on getting over those initial jitters and the learning curve that will follow.

Alongside that, I'm also doing something very big this year: I am putting my main focus on my writing. This year I am and I will create and continue a writing habit, a habit that will get me published and paid for my writing (something long overdue IMHO). I'm staring off with a flash fiction challenge and also keeping daily entries in my paper journal. Then I will also post more often here and then of course, any ongoing projects. I also plan on entering more contests and taking more chances like that with my writing. Challenge myself to do something different!

I also am expanding myself socially by going to church (more on that in a future entry) and being open to social activities at my job as well.

I am also taking huge steps to improving my health, both physical and mental. I am eating and drinking better, keeping a food journal, and will start exercising for 30 minutes twice a week starting tomorrow. I am shooting to lose about 40 pounds, but if I hit 35, I will be a happy camper there as well. I got an ugly wake-up call last year when I went to the doctor's and later when I weighed myself at my parents' place last Sunday.

As I go forward on this journey, I am thankful I have this little space on the Internet to catalog all this for myself (and whoever is interested too!). If you have big plans, or even little schemes, feel free to share them in the comments!

Here's to 2016, the year I turn 30!

...whoa, I'm going to be 30 this year.

*It's sad how he's the best of everyone, but has no chance of getting the nomination. A snowball has a better chance in surviving hell. But I would love to be wrong here!

NaNoWriMo Plans!

Alrighty, since it's getting close to that time of the year (besides the release of many Oktoberfest beers), it's time to announce what I'm planning to do this NaNoWriMo.

I have decided, since I attempted this last time, but I then wrote something else (OMG Spiders)... my next project will be something fun: a Silent Hill fan fiction. Right now, it's titled Silent Hill: Secret History (a “tribute” to one of my favorite novels). It's actually an idea I had for a while going with themes I normally work with, but in a Silent Hill setting.

Okay, okay... it's an idea for a game for the series that I hope one day I'll become respected enough to give it to Konami. (Yeah, I wish. Pffff.)

Either way, as it gets closer, this could change, but I really feel it. I want something super-fun and silly. So a fan fiction for one of my all-time favorite video games. *shrug*

And now... since I had nothing better to do a while back, here is the playlist/soundtrack I created for it (that's always half the fun: creating a soundtrack for a project):

"It’s Gonna Be Easy Now" by Dan Seals
"The Last One to Know" by Reba McEntire
"Holding On for Life" by Broken Bells
"Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine" by The White Stripes
"Worlds in Collision" by Jerry Harrison*
"Looking At the Invisible Man" by The Dead Weather
"Leave A Trace" by CHVRCHES
"Half Life" by Twin Shadow
"The Waiting" by Akira Yamaoka
"Compass" by Zola Jesus*
"Catch" by Allie X
"Helelyos" by SEXWITCH
"Poison Tree" by Beth Orton
"Carrion Flowers" by Chelsea Wolfe (hells yeah!)
"Lord Knows" by Dum Dum Girls
"When She Comes" by EMA
"Surround Sound" by Empire for the Sun
"Immortals" by Marnie Stern"
"Am I Real?" by Nite Jewel
"The Day of Night" by Akira Yamaoka
"I’m A Ruin" by Marina & the Diamonds

*I’m torn between “Worlds in Collision” or “Compass” being be the official song.

Camp NaNoWriMo Plans

So after thinking about it for twenty minutes (no really, it took me that long) I have decided to do the rebel thing and not write a new novel. I rather add more to Thorns (2011's NaNoWriMo project), which remains "incomplete" at 51k. And then last year's project, Spiders, needs some serious tightening up and continuity errors fixed (there's a butt-ton of them, apparently). And also, because I'm stupidly ambitious, do a second draft of my first one-month writing success: Blues.

Sure, with the news of the job thing happening (I have a feeling I won't get it, so I'll be searching elsewhere, which was my original plan), though it's still a dose of:

I almost had a moment of

But no, I shall persevere. I will do this thing, since I won't do it for November, since I'm trying for grad school again. And now, to choose the short story that will be my possible ticket to three years of MFA learning... and oh yeah, wasn't I working on Dolls?

Dammit.

NaNoWriMo 2012: Houston, We Have Cowbell!

Okay, I hit the ground running today, getting to 3,000 words. That's going to be the daily goal; along with finishing the grad school application and finishing my current novel project. So yeah, a f***-ton of writing. To be honest, every time I write 2,000 words a day, I feel I don't do enough. But that's the thing: that's a lot of words... for ONE project. I need to have several going. Plus, I could prevent burnout by switching mindsets for different ideas.

But I have to be careful. I don't want to hurt myself with this. But here is my solemn promise: if things get nasty during the month, I'll drop NaNoWriMo and work on what's important at the moment: the application. We'll have to see as the month goes on...

Happy writing!

NaNoWriMo 2012 Plans (or: I Was A Teenage Fan-Fiction Writer)

As the ninth month of the year draws slowly to a close, along with the end of a brutal season and the entrance of my favorite season, it is time to begin making plans for NaNoWriMo. After some serious thought, I have decided to participate in it again. Maybe I won't be in it to win, because the prize may likely be the same (coupon for Scrivener, etc.) or I may just do it just so I can get another sweet avatar thingy showing how effing boss I am.

I'm torn between two ideas: the story of an FBI agent and a local detective solving the mystery of a dead butler. Or a Silent Hill fan fiction about a possible apocalypse.

Okay, lemme explain the last one a bit. Yes, I used to write fan fiction. Silent Hill was one of the fandoms. No, I never published any of it. The only one I finished was a short story about what happened in South Ashfield Apartments during the events of Silent Hill 4: The Room. No, I will not publish it anywhere on the 'Net. It has a terrible OC (original character) protagonist. Now, we shall never speak of it again... (eh)

Either way, I'm tempted to write the fan fiction. It was an old idea that I never got around to finishing, and it sounds pretty effing awesome. I had this whole thing scoped out, like big-time. It's going to require a major overhaul, the protagonists have moved onto starring in original fiction that I've planned out. But it will give me a chance to really execute some of the original ideas I had for the characters on newer ones (e.g. I had plans to make the main character have amplified hearing). Yeah, you know what? Eff it. I'm gonna do it.

So, here is to a fun-as-hell NaNoWriMo. 2012 was a rough year. I think I deserve a fun writing project.

This post was brought to you by my second favorite Channel Awesome personality and Roxy Music's "Same Old Scene".

What I've Been Up To...

Hello again, peeps! Welcome to July, where your electric bills will rise to ridiculous levels and the sunscreen is your best friend. May the A/Cs always work and the cold water be plentiful for you all. And for those currently experiencing the cooler seasons... enjoy it while it lasts. It will be your turn soon. *insert evil laughter*

One big thing I got done today is book the hotel my sister and I will be staying at in New York later this month. That pretty much leaves any last-minute things to do (like get together toiletries and packing) before the big day. Also found some cool free apps that will help me and my sister get around the city.

The original big day is about twelve days away, working on some gift-buying (and making!) for my best friend's wedding. I got my dress back and got together all the makeup and accessories I'm gonna need. I have that entire weekend off, so I can recover and help do last-minute stuff.

Got a long to-do list, along with what I listed above, of things to get done this week. Two of them include blog posts for Jupiter_Nova and two more posts here.

Sorry for not much else, y'all. Do stay tuned, as always!

What's Been Happening So Far...

This weekend, as part of my job at the non-profit, I'm joining my co-workers in a parade. I already decorated my ridiculous fish hat with colorful curly ribbons to commemorate the good times. I'm excited about it, but also concerned. I think I am getting a cold, but that's not going to stop me. But it won't surprise me if I pass out Sunday night (also after going to see Vienna Teng in concert [whoo-hoo!]) and wake up the next day feeling like a semi had struck me.

So much to do with plenty of time to do it, believe it or not. Today, time is surplus.

I'm also thinking of taking up a few hobbies to help me through some of the rough patches in my life at the moment. Atop that, gain more skills and knowledge. Like bookbinding and making soaps, even going back to drawing. Though, the last thing I want to do is get bogged down in too many hobbies.

So far, got a few things done. A few more before going to the bookstore for a closing shift.

I need to stay on top of this blog.

Holy mackerel...

this dude apparently had the same thought as me:
In many ways, Jerry Harrison is sort of the Lindsey Buckingham of Talking Heads - the factor that pushed them over the top that no one seems to remember or talk about (heck, Harrison and Buckingham even look somewhat alike!).
Dude. Seriously. Get outta my head! Joking aside, it's nice to feel not alone in that thought. As the cliché goes, great minds think alike. And I see that you are from Christchurch. Hope you and your loved ones are well.

~

Inspired by that post, I have decided to do a (revisit) review on Harrison's 1988 album Casual Gods (though actually, that's the name of his band) as part of my review series that never seems to end. Details on that later...

Either way, it's always nice to find people with similar ideas.
